Denver Archbishop Chaput: Biden should refrain from communion; "looks forward to speaking with him privately"

Denver Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput, said in statement to The Associated Press that Biden should refrain from taking Communion because of his stance:
Four years ago, Chaput and a few other U.S. bishops drew notice for suggesting Democrat John Kerry should either be denied the Catholic sacrament or not present himself for Communion because of his abortion-rights stance, triggering what came to be known as the "wafer watch."

Chaput, one of the nation's most outspoken bishops on Catholic political responsibility, said Catholics who disagree with the church on "serious, sanctity of life issues" separate themselves from communion with the church and should not present themselves for the Eucharist.

Biden "has admirable qualities to his public service," Chaput said in his statement. "But his record of support for so-called abortion 'rights,' while mixed at times, is seriously wrong. I certainly presume his good will and integrity — and I presume that his integrity will lead him to refrain from presenting himself for Communion, if he supports a false 'right' to abortion."

Chaput added that he looks forward to speaking with Biden privately.

On August 20th, 2008, Catholic News Agency reported that Archbishop of Denver Charles J. Chaput was not invited to pray or speak at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado.

Chaput will, however, be attending a Prayer Vigil & Rally at Planned Parenthood Abortion Clinic on August 25th, 2008.

Please note that Archbishop Chaput does not specifically tell us not vote for Obama/Biden. Rather, he points out what Biden's action should be -- to refrain from taking Holy Communion until he repents and reverses his pro-abortion stance, which goes squarely against Church teaching on the dignity of human life at all stages.

Archbishop Chaput's statement doesn't reflect a conflict of church and state; it does make clear for us that we must prayerfully and thoughtfully bring our personal faith into public action.

Please pray for Senator Biden, that he will recant his position on pro-life issues, which are fundamental to all human rights; and that he will actively support the unborn.

May the Holy Spirit continue to enliven and encourage Archbishop Chaput and all priests, brothers, sisters and lay people to speak and act in defense of the sanctity and dignity of all human life.

BTW, be sure to check out an hour-long interview with Archbishop Chaput on EWTN at 9pm MT. Awesome!

The "Belway Boys" on Fox this week-end opined that Pope Innocent permitted abortion. I hope the Archbishop lends his considerable influence in discussing this matter with them.
